One of the major problems with pups preferring to go inside rather than out can be the way they were raised by the breeder. If you have hard floors inside and the pup was raised in a concrete kennel then your pup is seeking the same type of flooring that it has been used to when it was young. My only suggestion is to reprimand the pup with a verbal growl when you see it going to the toilet inside. Under no circumstances should you smack the dog as this will just make him frightened of going to the toilet in front of you when your outside. Persevere with taking him out even if you go out for 5 mins come in for 30 secs and then take him out again. Make a huge fuss of him when he does toilet outside, cuddles, high praise, a treat (really yummy one), and even a game. A lot of people suffer with this problem but perseverance always pays in the end...Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice. Thats pretty much what we've been trying. Sadly to no avail so far. This one will require a lot of patience on our part I think.

Frustrating when she learns everything else so damn quickly!

Hi, it can be a slow process, but in my experience once they get it they really get it, and it usually doesn't take too long providing you are extremely consistent and vigilant. Make sure that the pup is always in the same room as you so that you can keep a close eye on him at all times, and if you need a break or are too busy to watch him carefully then pop hims outside for awhile. It can be very frustrating but try not to let the dog see your frustration as he will read it the wrong way and possibly become hesitant or confused. Best of luck.

We're giving it a red hot go but my wife is fast losing interest in the dog soiling the carpet in the living area 5-6 times a day....

Unfortunately we cant put the dog outside as we're still waiting on the side fence to be finished. So she's an inside dog for a little while yet.

And at this stage it's looking like all new carpets fairly soon. Arrgh!

Hi, make sure that you are not cleaning the carpets with any ammonia based products as this will attract the dog back to the same area. The best thing to wash them with is a dishwashing detergent. You could try putting your pup on a leash and having him walk around with you all day as this would make you more aware of when he needed to go and give you more of an opportunity to get him outside when he needs to go. Consistency and persistence will pay off in the end. Good Luck

For anyone who's been watching the saga of Niya's toilet training I can report that we've finally made a breakthrough.
Last Saturday I took her out the backyard with me while I was doing some repair work.
To my surprise she went to the toilet out there - twice.

Lavish praise of course and since then we've been very diligent about taking her out there often, and 90% of the time we're rewarded.
She still 'goes' inside, but the incidences are greatly reduced. Hopefully soon she'll start wanting to go outside and letting us know?.....
